Feb 11-Wednesday-Day 11
Chem 122-
1-First we will complete the problem from 58 in pairs from yesterday
2-We will complete calorimeter theory and then do a slightly new calculation with a bomb calorimeter. Please do #5(bomb calorimeter calculation)
3-You have a quiz on Hess's Law-1 question
4-If time permits..
More work with reaction calculations with heat of reaction and an equation is provided
Please do 11 a and b for hwk it is like 14 and 15 from the text
Test next wednesday on Ch 17 and energy calculations..
Calorimeter calculation: Need more practice?
Extra Practise:
A. A chemistry student dissolves 4.51 grams of sodium hydroxide in 100.0 mL of
water at 19.5°C (in a calorimeter cup). As the sodium hydroxide dissolves, the
temperature of the surrounding water increases to 31.7°C. Determine the heat of
solution of the sodium hydroxide in J/mol.

B. A 2.50 g sample of zinc is heated, then placed in a calorimeter containing
65.0 g of water. Temperature of water increases from 20.00 Celsius to 22.50
Celsius. The specific heat of the zinc is 0.390 J/g oC. What was the initial
temperature of the zinc metal samples.(we are going to assume that the final
temp of the zinc and the water is the same.

C. A 5.23 g sample of coal(assume pure carbon) is placed in a bomb calorimeter
that has a specific heat of 4.53 kJ/oC. If the temperature changes
from 21oC to 28oC, find the Hc for the coal.

Chem 112-
1-Quiz today on metric and lab safety-We will spend half of the class doing a prelab for the first set of labs.
2-We will be checking over answers to theory questions from the textbook. You will have the opportunity to ask questions about any of the work you have done so far. You were given some time to work on your prelab in class.
Remember to do the following(from yesterday)p 119 #25-33
Our test is next wednesday.
3-If time permits you will sign your contract. Please do not forget the course information form that needs to be signed by your
Homework....to be assigned for tonight is p103 #1-7 and p 108 #8 to 14
HOMEWORK: The prelab sheet needs to be done on looseleaf and submitted on monday in order to start labs.
If you need more practise with electron configuration try p 135 #8, 9
You will be given time to work on your prelab and the theory review

Feb 12-Thursday-Day 12

Day 12 Chem 122-
Assignment
on thermochemical equations is due on monday, however if you wish to hand it in early you will receive an extra 10%.
We will review #11 then work on 10 ...
Please do .#10 a) ans 1.99 x 10exp4 kJ, and #10b is for homework..
I introduced the last type of calculation today. The example that I went over in class is attached . Please do #13 tonight. The second question on propane is to be done on Monday night.

2013-09-23_0002.jpg

I gave you the numerical answer for 10b and 11b. Please check the formulas for 10b ...it is combustion of hydrogen with oxygen to make water vapor.
13.(You will add 13 to your page). #13 What amount ( mass) of methane undergoing complete combustion is required to heat 100.0 L of water from 5 degrees celsius to 70 degrees celsius?

Here is another question like #13 to try What mass of propane must be burned to heat 2.50 L of water from 10 degrees Celsius to 800 degrees Celsius?

Chem 112
1-More time for prelab work and review page.
2-p 167 Do 10 to 15
3-You will receive your quizzes back on metric and lab safety.
4-Test on Wednesday Feb 19-please use review sheet to see topics to study. Do not forget the reviewvocabulary assignment for next Wednesday.
Next Monday -Lab Day 1 No open toes shoes and please bring your own eye glasses if you are a contact lens wearer.
-Today(or yesterday) you will receive a vocabulary sheet to be passed in on day of test next wednesday(test day) This outlines the major theory items from the first unit.
Lab Set One
Lab 1/5 Metric lab-This lab involves working with measurement af area, finding the density of a shape and some challenging conversions
Lab 2/6 Elements versus Compounds-This experiment involves using heat to break down compounds. You will find that it has a flaw in terms of trying to break down all compounds. You will become an expert at using the centigram balance.
Lab 3/7 Candle Lab-This lab involves making observations and trying different techniques for dealing with candle wax combustion.
Lab 4/8 Separation of Matter-This experiment involves using the varatious methods for separating matter to separate the components in an unknown mixture. Acuracy will be very important in this experiment
